Troubleshooting
Most problems fall in one of the cases below. When in doubt, first update to the latest release: many of the issues listed here were fixed in a specific version.
My antivirus blocks or deletes the executable
Section titled “My antivirus blocks or deletes the executable”This is a known false positive. The tool works entirely offline and never accesses the network. Add an exception for the executable, or build it from source.
I can’t set the game path
Section titled “I can’t set the game path”If you’re encountering permission issues when trying to select the game’s executable, switch from Executable files (*.exe) to All files (*.*) in the File Explorer and open any file next to the game’s executable (create it if necessary). The tool only looks for the path to the parent folder.
“The game is already running” even though it isn’t
Section titled ““The game is already running” even though it isn’t”If you’ve just closed the game, you need to wait a few seconds before you can launch it again. If the error persists, see “Nothing happens when I try to play a level” below.
Nothing happens when I try to play a level
Section titled “Nothing happens when I try to play a level”Sometimes, the game’s executable is hanging even if you don’t see its icon in your taskbar. When that happens, you can either open Steam and close the game, or use the Task Manager to kill the game’s process.
Crash doesn’t spawn
Section titled “Crash doesn’t spawn”This is usually related to having a 100% save file in the auto-save slot. Put your save file in a different slot to fix this issue.
Crash dies as soon as the level starts
Section titled “Crash dies as soon as the level starts”The death plane is probably above the ground. Select Other → WorldInstance in the object tree and lower the death plane height.
Original levels don’t work correctly after playing custom levels
Section titled “Original levels don’t work correctly after playing custom levels”Delete the file update.pak located in the game’s archives/ folder and try again.
The game shows a black screen or is stuck on the loading screen
Section titled “The game shows a black screen or is stuck on the loading screen”This usually means that a required asset/dependency is missing from the archive. If it happened during basic level editing (copy/paste/delete/import) it’s probably a bug, please share it.
- Remove the last objects you added and test again to find the culprit.
The game crashes on load or freezes after some time
Section titled “The game crashes on load or freezes after some time”This is usually caused by a limitation of the game engine. It has been reported that freezes can start to appear if there are too many objects in a level, but the exact conditions are extremely inconsistent:
- It seems to happen more frequently the less RAM you have
- If you have been using the editor for a long time, try to close & reopen it to clear the memory usage (especially if you’ve opened many levels in the editor).
- There’s a concept of “object limit” in a level, but it’s not a fixed number and can vary a lot depending on the object type:
- Crates, Enemies and Spawners in general count for the most in the object limit, because they have a lot of components
- Static objects / Scenery count for almost nothing, there’s still a limit but you can easily reach 5000+ static objects in a level without issue, whereas 300 crates would be pushing it.
- The freezes are more likely to happen if there are a lot of crates/enemies in a small area. Try spacing them more throughout the level
If the error persists even after removing objects, it could also mean that a file in the archive is corrupted/invalid. If it happened during basic level editing (copy/paste/delete/import) it’s probably a bug, please share it.
- Remove the last objects you added and test again to find the culprit.
The editor crashed
Section titled “The editor crashed”When a crash occurs, the tool writes the logs to crash-log-latest.txt and opens its parent folder. Share the log on Discord or in a GitHub issue along with the maximum details about your actions before it crashed.
An object shows in the editor but not in the game
Section titled “An object shows in the editor but not in the game”-
Most game objects are spawned by a script trigger when the player enters its volume. If the trigger is missing or badly placed, the object never spawns. Show the triggers with
Visible Camera Layers → Script Triggersand check that one covers the area where the player arrives. -
If you’ve imported the object using the Object Library, try to copy/paste the object by opening its original archive instead, as the copy/paste feature does more work under the hood and is more likely to import every dependency correctly.
A special object does not work in my custom level
Section titled “A special object does not work in my custom level”Rides, jetpack, boulders and hubs need to be enabled per level in Level settings: Enable Hog Ride, Enable Bear Ride, Enable Tiger Ride, Enable Jetpack, Enable Boulder and Enable Hub. See Level settings.
Objects lose their collisions
Section titled “Objects lose their collisions”Static collisions are rebuilt when you save. Prefabs losing their collisions after being moved, pasted or deleted was fixed in v1.44. If you’re using the latest version, please share this bug.
If a static model has no collisions to begin with, its CStaticCollisionComponent is greyed out: see Static models.
The hub says some levels are missing
Section titled “The hub says some levels are missing”The level archives must be directly in the game’s archives/ folder, with the exact file names the hub expects. See Play a custom level.
The interface is tiny or huge on a 2K, 4K or Retina screen
Section titled “The interface is tiny or huge on a 2K, 4K or Retina screen”Fixed in v1.41.9. Update the tool.
The editor is slow
Section titled “The editor is slow”- Having an active selection can cut the frame rate in half. Press Escape to clear the selection when you don’t use it. Ctrl+Z selects everything back.
- Hide the camera layers that you don’t actively need
- Close the level editors you are not using.
- Close Crash NST or other resource intensive apps
The editor takes a lot of RAM
Section titled “The editor takes a lot of RAM”- Lower
Editor settings → Max texture res.(the default is 512) and restart the editor. - Close and reopen the editor regularly after using it for a while, or if you’ve opened many levels.
- Open the Archive Editor and right-click on files containing the most objects in the
maps/folder to exclude them from the package file and prevent them from being loaded by the level editor. Remember to toggle “Include in package file” back afterwards!
The Object Library takes forever to open
Section titled “The Object Library takes forever to open”The first initialisation scans every archive of the game and takes 10 to 20 minutes. The window may look unresponsive during that time. You can open a second instance of the editor meanwhile. See Object Library.
Still stuck?
Section titled “Still stuck?”Ask on Discord or open a GitHub issue. Include the editor version, the log file if there was a crash, and the steps to reproduce.
